Facial Hair Transplants

Restoring Hair to the Goatee, Moustache, Beard and Sideburns

Transplantation of facial hair is a procedure which restores hair to areas where the growth of hair is either thin or missing entirely. Whilst this procedure is more commonly carried out on the goatee and moustache areas, however it can also be performed for the majority of beard area, sideburns and cheeks. Facial hair transplants are also commonly used to conceal acne scars and other facial scars.

Loss of facial hair occurs for a number of reasons including laser hair removal, electrolysis, surgery, burns, injury or simply as a result of genetics. The majority of of goals from this type of procedure vary from a minor filling in or thin coverage of a small area all the way through to a full restoration of a thick full goatee or beard area. The procedure itself can be performed and carried out on areas where there is little to no hair or on areas where hair growth is thin and the client desires more fullness.

On a client to client basis, the number of individual grafts that is required for the treatment can vary but as an average benchmark, the number of grafts per treatment are as follows;

  • 350-500 grafts for the moustache area
  • 600-700 grafts for the full goatee area
  • 200-250 grafts for each sideburn
  • 300-700 grafts for a cheek

While not a common occurrence, some patients request and require a second procedure to transplant additional grafts to achieve a thicker density with their beard.

As with a regular hair transplant procedure, the donor hairs for a facial hair transplant are extracted from the back or sides of the scalp. The choice of site is usually dependent on which offers the closest match to the facial hair structure. Once transplanted, the hairs are permanent and typically will grow as if they are natural facial hair, providing similar texture and other characteristics. The transplanted hair, once grown, can be shaved as you would with the rest of you facial hair without any adverse consequences.

I’ve only had my consultation with Sharon but already I know I’m in good hands. She was extremely informative and happy to answer any of my questions and talked me through what is needed for my hair loss. I have booked my procedure and I know from the results I have seen the Surgeon has got that I am going to be one happy less bald man.
